Forget everything else, forget all the other scenario's and theories people on different websites are coming up with for me it's all about our tempo and shape that has caused Chelsea the problems we have had in recent weeks. I for one have become more and more frustrated with the way we are playing and the tempo of our play.
Yesterday's game at Villa is the perfect example of what's been happening in recent weeks. Chelsea's play has been sluggish, laboured and our passing at times has been woeful.
Chelsea have played one paced for the majority of the last 6 weeks or so and it's because of this we have struggled. Look at Villa yesterday. Chelsea sat off them, played at a slower tempo and this allowed Villa time and space on the ball and they hurt us not once or twice, but three times!.
When Chelsea are playing "our football" as Carlo calls it, we play at a high tempo without the ball. We pressurise the opposition, close them down and force them into errors.
With the ball, we move it forward quickly and look for the killer ball in behind our beat the defender and whip in a dangerous cross to Drogba. First half yesterday, Chelsea were doing the opposite.
When we do play at this slower tempo, Nico Anelka and Florent Malouda drop deeper and deeper inside to come and get the ball and get involved in the play. When they come off the wings, it makes Chelsea shape to compact and is easy to defend against.
Yesterday Anelka would find himself drop deeper and deeper and how many times did we see Ferreira or Bruma play a ball into him with someone up his arse closing him down and forcing the ball out for a throw, or to be played back to where it came from. I can only count on one hand the amount of times the ball was played wide left for Cole and Malouda to link up. Malouda found himself in the middle of pitch more often than not and when we lost the ball, Villa countered down that side.
When we do get it right and play at a high tempo and keep players wide we dominate games. Yesterday once time was ticking by and we were chasing the game we suddenly went through the gears and bossed possession and created chances.
It leaves me wondering why does it take a situation like this to kick start the players?. They have had two weeks off before the Arsenal game, they have had a break to recharge the batteries, so why does it take that long?.
Chelsea need to work hard between now and Wednesday at Wolves. We need to start games playing at the tempo that the opposition cannot live with. We need to play higher up the pitch and not allow the opposition time and space to play the ball into dangerous areas and get crosses into the box.
If we can get our tempo back from the beginning of games, keep Malouda and Anelka in their positions wide and much higher up the pitch so as to not leave Drogba isolated, then Chelsea can and will get back to winning ways. When we play like that we can beat anyone.
Carlo needs to work hard, the players need to work hard and if they do, they will turn this around of that I am 100% certain.
If they keep playing like they have in recent weeks, then our season will slip away into nothing.
