Like many of you Chelsea fans yesterday, I was really looking forward to seeing Chelsea kick on from two good performances in the Premier League and hopefully to get a result at Everton. I'd mentioned in my preview that it would be a difficult game and we would need to play well to get a result. It's just a shame thinking about it now that I was right as it was a difficult game and we needed to play well to get the result. The fact Chelsea didn't play well and were lucky enough to come away with a draw is the only thing I can take from the game yesterday.
Once again the big players seemed to go missing or had indifferent games. Lampard, brought in to replace Mikel in the only change from last Monday night, seemed non existent and unable to influence the game as he wanted. Didier Drogba couldn't influence the game enough and spent most of his time either on the floor or arguing with the Referee and Florent Malouda was again very disappointing.
Apart from one chance in the first half as Anelka ran onto a ball that had split the Everton defence from Ramires that Anelka shot straight at Howard as he came rushing off his line, we never really looked like scoring. We had created half chances and either shot or headed over the bar or once more directly at Howard but tame enough to never worry the Everton keeper.
Cech had some work to do in the first half as he saved from Rodwell. Everton also created half chances but never anything else to test Cech. With their five man midfield, the game seemed very scrappy as both sides looked to try and dominate the ball and impose their games on each other.
In the second half it was Everton again pressing forward. Ramires blocked another Everton cross from the right as Saha looked to flick into the net at the far post as pressure mounted. Cech was then called upon to tip a Fellaini header over the bar. We looked to have got away with some slack defending on that occasion but the resultant corner was a different story!.
I had said Louis Saha loves a goal and good performance against Chelsea and once again he scored against us. This time is was a free header around 6-8 yards from goal as John Terry had misjudged the flight of the ball and Cech was rooted to his position. Saha headed home with authority and we found ourselves 1-0 down.
We hadn't created anything of note up to this point which again was really disappointing and again it was Everton who were still creating chances. Seamus Coleman saw his header parried by Cech before Essien managed to throw himself to block another attempt on the Chelsea goal.
As the corner came over that followed Essien's block, Chelsea broke on the counter attack and got back level 1-1. Malouda had come off from Salomon Kalou and it was Kalou that pulled us right back into the game. As the ball was cleared, we broke from inside our own half and a cross field ball from Anelka, dummied by Ramires found Kalou on the right hand side. He took the ball in his stride and ran at the defender in front of him, into the box and fired a shot hard and low into the opposite corner. Howard was beaten and Chelsea were right back in it.
Ramires then had a half chance and fired a shot from 25 yards that hit the foot of the post and bounced clear and then after Ivanovic had swung a leg at a clearance that he miss-hit over his own head, Jermaine Beckford was onto it like a flash, looked up and struck a volley from the corner of the penalty area at goal. Petr Cech stood up and got his hands to the ball to push the strike over the bar. Great effort and a great save.
As the game fizzled out more half chances as Essien and then Saha headed wide. The game finished 1-1 and it a replay at Stamford Bridge on a date to be confirmed. The winner has been drawn at home against Reading in the next round, so it's a chance for whoever wins to get to the Quarter Finals (no disrespect Reading fans).
To sum up, I am glad with a point as Everton shaded the game. Feel as though we were simply not at it once again and it does concern me. Chelsea need to pull their fingers out once more in order to face Sunderland on Tuesday.
