One thing stands out for me of late and that's the Chelsea bench. Not just the players sitting there and the lack of squad depth, I am talking of the void next to Carlo. For me anyway there seems to be something missing, the link between the players and Carlo.
Everyone of course has an opinion about Butch Wilkins and is entitled to theirs. I have been surprised with the reaction of the fans and have to say they are well and truly split between liking him or not rating him at all and that's fair enough.
I am asking you to just think passed your view of the man himself, but look at the bigger picture that we have sitting there at the moment. Every successful manager has had someone to fall back on, someone that is a go between from him and the players. Look at Chelsea back in the 90's and it was Graham Rix, a player who knows the English game through and through and is respected by the players. Jose had Stevie Clark and was insistent that his when he chose his Assistant it should be someone who knows Chelsea, breathes Chelsea and again has been a player with huge experience who can relate the method's Jose was trying to preach to the players and again acted as a go between.
Guus and Carlo had Ray Wilkins. No matter what we think, he was hugely popular with the players because of his reputation and the person he was. You would always see the two of them whether it was Ray and Guus or Ray and Carlo deep in conversation during games and Wilkins stand up on the sideline talking to players..
I really do rate Paul Clement but as a Coach, but am wondering if he himself finds it difficult to step up to play that role with Carlo as let's face it, Michael Emanalo, who has been asked to fill the void, has shown very little emotion during games and most importantly of all for me anyway, when the players have needed inspiration or a gee-up in games he hasn't done anything.
Someone has made a comment on here in one of my posts yesterday that Carlo looks lost on the side of the pitch when we are struggling in games. Look at Wolves the other day, he stood there on the sideline trying to bark his orders to the players..ALONE.
I really think the right move for Roman and Chelsea to make is to bring in ZOLA or DENNIS WISE to come and support Carlo. Even someone like MALDINI too. Maldini would command instant respect and would get it from the players, but the likes of Dennis or Franco being there, both being Chelsea through and through would provide the club and Carlo with an important link we have been missing.
So after reading this I am asking you the fans:
Do you agree we need someone to support Carlo?, Who would you suggest?KTBFFH
