I have to say the rumour started off in the News of the World today about Chelsea looking to make a move for Andrey Arshavin in the summer has surprised me. First of all I can't see Arsenal looking to sell him to another Premier League club. Secondly I think if earlier reports in the week are to be believed, he will look to head back home to Russia and finally I can't see Chelsea making a move for him just because he is mates with Roman Abramovich.
My own personal opinion of Arshavin is that going forward he is quality but maybe at times lacks a quicker ball. Maybe that's because he used to play behind the front man for Zenit and now for Arsenal he is deployed out on the left wing. However, I have an issue with the player when he doesn't have the ball.
I cannot for the life of me stand players that do not work hard when they don't have the ball. It maybe the instruction he receives from Wenger. He may be told that he doesn't have to work hard defensively when he doesn't have the ball but I would find that hard to believe.
He is lazy in my view. I struggle to find any instances of Arshavin working hard to track back or to make an important tackle in the defensive third. Now it may just be me but I am sure there are Arsenal fans that would have the same view.
For me, if you want to be successful then you need all 11 players on the pitch to work hard all over the pitch and with Arshavin in your side let's face it you have to carry him if you play next to him.
So for me it's a thanks but no thanks. There are plenty of younger options out there or even at the club who would be prepared to work hard to earn a place in our starting eleven.
What do you think on Arshavin as a player and the link to Chelsea?. Have I got Arshavin wrong?
