Chelsea drew 1-1 with Tottenham at White Hart Lane this afternoon in a much much better performance in the second half after Spurs had taken a first half lead. Chelsea looked like they huffed and puffed in the first half, played too slow and Spurs made us pay with a great taken goal from Roman Pavlyuchenko. It was our spirit and fight in the second half that showed we are gradually getting back to being our Chelsea.
Chelsea started the game with a midfield three of Ramires, Mikel and Essien and all in all did well at times but allowed Spurs time and space in the first half to turn and play his passes. Our extra man in midfield didn't look like making a difference at times.
Don't get me wrong, Chelsea created some half chances in the first half with Salomon Kalou at the hart of them but nothing really to trouble Gomes in goal.
Spurs took the lead with you have to say a good goal created out of nothing. A ball played into Roman Pavlyuchenko in the box, fronted up by two Chelsea defenders into the box looked like not being that dangerous. He took a first touch with his right foot back across the box from where the ball came from and put Chelsea's defenders on the back foot and he then struck the ball inside the near post and passed Cech with his left foot. Cech will be disappointed but you can't take anything away from the finish. (We could complain that Defoe was originally offside when the ball was played to him).

It was a blow for us at the time. As soon as the goal goes in you are thinking "here we go again" but Chelsea remained compact and our defensive shape was good. Cech was never troubled again in the first half.
Second half starts and a positive change is made by Ancelotti, Mikel comes off and Didier Drogba comes on up front as a two with Anelka. Chelsea switch to 4-4-2 and immediatley look better for the change. We looked to have a better shape about ourseleves and take the game to Spurs.
Saying that, Defoe strikes the first attempt on goal wide from just outside the box and again Cech isn't troubled.
Chelsea's passing is much much better now and we are probing away at Spurs but as yet nothing much to report. Spurs again on the break have another half chance. Ivanovic heads the ball clear from a cross to the edge of the box and Modric miss-kicks his attempt well wide.
Twenty minutes into the second half and Drogba has a sighter. The ball comes out to him just left of centre around 25 yards out and he hits the ball towards the far post and Gomes gets down to make the save.
Chelsea are well on top now and have the majority of possession. Chelsea are closing the ball down now much better in midfield and allowing us to threaten Spurs much more.
We nearly get a slice of luck as a cross is played into the box and the ball comes back off Palacios' head forcing Gomes to make a save and push the ball over the bar.
At this stage the game is wide open with both sides pushing forward. Spurs are looking dangerous on the break but where they had a final ball in the first half they were lacking in the second half. Cech didn't have to make any real saves.
Sturridge then comes on for Kalou and the impressive thing about Sturridge is the fact that when he has the ball the first thing he is looking to do is get it in the box.
Then Chelsea get back level. A long ball played up to Didier Drogba and as he is under pressure from Dawson and they come together to challenge from the ball, the ball comes off Drogba's arm and goes past Dawson. Drogba is the first to react and as the ball finds itself inside the corner of the Spurs box, he hits the ball first time under pressure from Dawson straight at Gomes and lucky for us, Gomes makes a mess of it and the ball comes off him and into the empty net. 1-1 Drogba.

Chelsea are now looking to push on for the winner, but as I have said before Spurs look dangeous on the break. Next Anelka hits a low shot easily saved by Gomes with Drogba lurking for any rebound.
Then we are in four minutes of injury time and Chelsea get a penalty. A ball up to Drogba on the egde of the box, under pressure from the defender, Drogba gets his foot to the ball and flicks it towards goal, Ramires is onto it like a flash and gets to the ball first as Gomes comes out and clatters him. Penalty given.
At this point I am looking for Lampard to pick up the ball but he doesn't. Maybe he isn't too confident of striking the ball that hard yet so Drogba picks the ball up. As he puts the ball down I can't help but think to myself he will put it to the keepers right and we'll have three points in the bag COME ON DROGBA!!!... He goes the other way and Gomes makes a great save, the rebound is cleared and it remains 1-1. Gutted!!.
The final minutes are played out and referree blows the whistle. We have finished 1-1.
So to sum up, first half we did ok, can do nothing about the goal as the first touch and finish were different class. Cech should be disappointed about being beaten near post. Chelsea played better than before in the first half but as the game went on, got sucked into playing slower and allowing Modric time and space to dictate the game. Anelka was disappointing.
Second half much better. The switch to 4-4-2 really worked well and Chelsea pressing higer up the pitch and closing Spurs down allowed us to dominate possession. Spurs still had their chances but Ferreira did a great job today on Bale and kept him quiet.
Drogba looked to be out to prove a point and maybe just maybe it was the kick up the arse he needed. He looked up for it and took his goal well. Just a shame about the penalty.
The fact that we played as we did second half shows the signs are good. This is the old Chelsea we are so used to seeing. Lampard back in a blue shirt is a major positive today.
Let's rememeber, Spurs are a really good side right now. Hard to beat and are playing well. I think any Spurs fan will tell you that they deserved a draw today, but deep down they know that Chelsea were the better side. When have we had the chance to say that recently?.
Its a point at the lane. A good base to work from, and morale boosting performace from the lads and something to build on against United next weekend.

So we'll take the point for now and the second half performance and look to kick on against United next week. However, we are left with the feeling that it could have been so much better!

"We should have won the game. Playing the way we did in the second half it looks like things are back to normal. We've been lacking passion but hopefully that's back now. We've got two huge games next but things are looking up. No-one has hit their top form so if we do that over Christmas then we have got a chance."
Harry Redknapp said:
"It was exciting, which is what people pay to watch. It was end to end stuff and wide open, both teams did a lot of attacking but the end product wasn't there - the keepers didn't have a lot to save."
Carlo Ancelotti said:
"We have to be happy because we played well against a strong team away from home. We had the chance to win with the penalty, but our performance was good and we can look forward with confidence now. This performance was a good place to start."
So we'll take the point for now and the second half performance and look to kick on against United next week. However, we are left with the feeling that it could have been so much better!
