Of course this morning most of the headlines about the game last night will refer to the Michael Essien tackle on Clint Dempsey. I am just wondering your thoughts and opinions on it. Watching Match of the day back last night, Alan Hansen felt it was harsh whereas Lee Dixon believed it to be a straight red card.
Have a look for yourselves here (excuse the background noise, its the only one I could find this morning):
For me it's the fact that Essien lifts boot feet of the ground in a sort of stamping action that gets him the red card. If you look again, he doesn't appear to make any contact with Dempsey at all.
These two had spats during the game and Dempsey had been complaining to the Referee about some "afters" with Essien during the game so maybe just maybe that influenced the Referee. If you have seen the game you will also note that although in this clip Dempsey looks to have been injured, he gets straight back up again and walks towards Essien and the Referee to point the finger.
My opinion remains however, the Referee will see the tackle as intent because of the motion of his two feet no matter if he catches the player or not and that's why he has been sent off.
Maybe harsh, maybe not. What do you people think?
