There are some things in life that happen that leave you dazed and confused, struggling to understand and to comprehend. People are put into these types of situations in all walks of life and have to deal with them. Some people choose to become vocal, speak out as they try and justify what has happened or try to understand and make sense of it all.
However, some people choose or are encouraged to remain tight lipped or sit tight and get on with things. I am gradually beginning to feel like maybe some of the rest of you that Carlo Ancelotti is one of the these people and has on more than one occasion since he came to Stamford Bridge, been made to do so by the board and only now are we beginning to understand the "baggage" that comes with managing "Our Chelsea".
Thursday's announcement by Chelsea that Michael Emenalo has been appointed as Ray Wilkins' replacement has come as a huge surprise to me and another one of these "boardroom" decisions that has left me thinking "what?". I can imagine that I am not alone.
I just want to put on record at this stage that I wish Emenalo the best and all the success in the world in his role as Carlo's number two and I personally have nothing against the bloke but you have to admit it's hardly an appointment by the club that appeases the press and the fans, it just add's fuel to the fire.
When the rumours were flying around that Chelsea would look to promote from within the club the natural successor to Wilkins seemed to be Paul Clement. The club has shocked us again with this new appointment. What astounds me is that this guy was the Head Opposition Scout at the club and has been promoted from that position. The statement on the website reads:
"Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Emenalo to the position of assistant first team coach. He moves up from his previous position of head opposition scout. It's hardly a statement to put our minds at rest so we can relax and feel like things at the Bridge will get back to normal now is it.
Michael has been an important part of the first team management structure since his arrival in October 2007, and his promotion to assistant first team coach is recognition of his efforts to date.
Michael will continue to oversee the first team scouting operation as he makes the transition to coaching. He will split the initial period between assisting first team coach Carlo Ancelotti and updating his coaching qualifications as he takes on this bigger and more influential role.
So Chelsea, chasing Premier League glory and Champions League glory this season, the trophy that Roman craves the most are now going to rely on someone who will split his role three ways for the remainder of the season or how ever long this "arrangement" will be for?.
Firstly to carry on with his first team scouting duties?. So does that mean he will continue to be away from our environment watching the opposition when he should be on the training ground with Carlo.
Secondly, he has no coaching experience at all so what benefit will that provide Carlo in this important transition period for the team with the busy and really important Christmas period approaching.
Finally, he needs to "update his coaching qualifications" as per the club but he doesn't have any so how long is that going to take?.
Someone mentioned on Twitter last night "does anyone remember a certain translator at Barcelona and look what happened to him!" but I simply cannot for the life of me understand this appointment at all.
So it leads me onto Carlo. He said this week:
"I prefer to stay controlling the technical aspect, the team, the players, but not the other things. I am not interested in the other things, like the financial side, because I don't have the experience. At AC Milan, I used to ask some things to the club about the new players but after that the club has to have the final decision. I know here in England some managers have total control of the club. I have control of the technical aspect of the club but with other things I am not involved. You have to say that it seems as though under Gourlay the whole outlook of the club has changed and the clout in the boardroom our manager whoever it may used to have has diminished to a point where you can imagine you would be informed by email or post-it note of certain decisions and aspects of the club.
Look at Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, do you ever think such a decision would be made at the Emirates without his consent or say so?. Do you think Sir Alex Ferguson works the same at United? Of course he does. He would have the ultimate say at the club and for Carlo to be in this position at Chelsea is hard to understand. You have to wonder if he is telling it like it is but feels something different.
You have to question whether or not after Wilkins if Carlo remains as happy as he always seemed to be at Chelsea. Carlo said after the Sunderland defeat last weekend that the team had a "Bad Mentality" and maybe this applies to "upstairs" at Chelsea now.
There have been all sorts of rumours and speculation about cost cutting at the Bridge and reports that last summer with the likes of Ballack, Cole, Deco, Belletti and Carvalho leaving, it had cut £20m from our wage bill. To remove Wilkins from his position cannot be seen as a cost cutting measure as I posted earlier today it was because of a fall out with Roman and Ron because he simply spoke his mind.
The fact that Carlo and JT spoke so openly of their feeling for Wilkins it just goes to show that it wasn't Carlo's decision, he never had any influence in it at all and has to live with it. Just like the Ballack decision I also posted about this morning, another Carlo admitted to Ballack that wasn's his decision.
It's different when the club releases or sells a player but to take the managers number 2, his right hand man away from him is a personal blow for Ancelotti as he needs to re-evaluate and re-focus his efforts to train the side, prepare the team for the biggest two games of our season so far against Newcastle next week and Birmingham tomorrow.
It's obvious to me right now and is my own opinion that Carlo has more or less been told to bite his lip and get on with it. For now he seems happy to do it but you have to wonder just how long he can keep doing it.
