This evening (remember it's an early kick off) Chelsea take on joint group leaders Spartak Moscow in the next of our Champions League games and with this game and the next game at the Bridge against the Russians, these could go a long way to deciding who finishes top of our group.
With Ramires, Drogba, Bosingwa, Lampard, Alex and Benayoun out for Chelsea tonight and Ancelotti to make late decisions on Ashley Cole and Michael Essien, this could be a chance for the youngsters tonight to impress. Whatever happens, right now I would take a draw and get home and it's as simple as that.
There are two players who have a massive responsibility tonight and that's Anelka and Malouda. These two combining together and linking up together can win games themselves and Chelsea and Carlo will be looking to these two to deliver tonight.
This is a different game purely because of the pitch. In the last couple of days it's being well documented everywhere that Cole has had ankle problems, Essien has had knee problems in the past and I have to say if I was Carlo I wouldn't play them tonight to make sure we protect them
On the flip side, this is a top of the table group game and we cannot afford to lose tonight as it would put pressure on us to beat them at the Bridge.
Spartak are a very attack minded side and like to play a 4-2-3-1 formation and will look to get at Chelsea tonight. Expect Chelsea's back five to line up as follows: Cech, Ferreira, Ivanovic, JT, Van Aanholt. I really feel that he will rest Cole.
Our midfield will be weakend without Lampard and also Essien I believe as it's pointless to take a risk with Essien. So expect our midfield three to be: Mikel, McEachran and Zhirkov.
The good news this week is that Kalou is back in training. Whether or not Carlo decides to play him so soon after injury is another thing, so expect Chelsea to keep the faith with Anelka, Malouda and Kakuta.
I really can't help feeling that we still have more than enough quality to get the job done tonight and maybe nick the points, but let's be realistic. We will be weakened in key area's and maybe just maybe Carlo for once, will look to see the game out for 90 minutes and come away with just a point.
Whatever happens, we can't afford to lose.
KTBFFH!
I totally agree with your headline. Let's get a point and get away from that horrible plastic pitch without any injuries. I hope Carlo rests Ashley Essien and Bosingwa. The type of previous injuries those 3 have had is not compatible with the pitch. It's just too risky
