This afternoon at Wembley, Chelsea lost 3-1 to Manchester United. That result has made it 4 defeats out of our last 4 pre-season games and you have to ask should we be worried?
Ok many of you would say its a nothing game, final preseason game and not to take much notice looking at the new season but it looked apparent today that we are lacking fitness ahead of our first league game in 6 days.
Let's face it, apart from a spirited fight back after the substitutions were made we never looked like troubling Van Der Sar today in goal apart from an Ivanovic header from a corner in the first half. The introduction of Drogba and Danny Sturridge in particular provided Chelsea with fresh legs and we began to control the game and create chances. One of which Kalou finished with a simple tap in to make it 1-2 at the time.
However, United looked sharper to me. They opened our defence wide open for all three goals and you have to say for the first goal we have little argument. Scholes, in plenty of space, played a ball over the top to Rooney who had made the run behind Ashley Cole, who first time played a cross to Valencia who made the opposite run to Rooney and cut inside, as the ball came across Valencia was unmarked and tapped home to make it 1-0 at half time.
United made it two in the second half when once more a ball behind our left back position allowed the cross to come in and once more an unmarked United forward, this time Hernandez tapped home from 8 yards to make it 2-0.
After we made a game of it when the subs were made and Kalou had made it 1-2 with minutes and injury time to spare it looked as though we were on the front foot but United being United got their foot on the ball to slow the game down, and Berbatov made a run this time behind our back four, the ball played into him and lobbed Hilario who for some reason was already on the edge of his box, into the empty net to make it 3-1 and it was game over.
United will celebrate, Chelsea will say it didn't really mean anything although I have to ask, if we had won would you feel that way?, but its plain to see we are lacking fitness and can you see that much of a difference come Saturday against DiMatteo's West Brom/
So I am asking you fellow Chelsea fans are you worried?

I think there is genuine cause for concern as 4 losses in a row is so unusual for us. I thought we lacked any spark or creativity and didnt really look like scoring apart from a couple of chances. Man U looked far more confortable. I would love to have seen a couple of new signings to get us excited and freshen things up. It all seems a bit flat somehow. We must hope that they train hard this week and are ready for Sunday as we cant afford to lose ground this early.
ReplyDeleteOk im a United fan but in all fareness, United looked fitter and better and the reason is becuase chelsea is an old team. we had rooney at 25, hernandez at 22, smalling at 19, evans at 21, nani at 23, fabio at 19/20. Chelski need to improve and the new signing ramieries looks really good.
ReplyDeleteHope chelsea get a good season because i would rather you's coming 2nd than Man Shitty.
I think apart from fitness we need to replace what we lost in transfers with talent that can improve us because it is evident that all this talk of youth coming through apart from kakuta, bruma and van aanholt is not going to bear fruit this season. We need to raise the bar in the first team to give the youth something to strive for. Lacklustre performance but i hope with about 2 more quality signings Ramires not included we should be in good stead.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Mariner was really lenient to Paul Scholes today! Anyone agree?
Fuck off you mancs fan.
ReplyDeleteReal worry for all chelsea fans (is carlo worried? hope he learned from manu class today.) Chelsea urgently needs some new quality signings cos there is some dead wood still around and carlo not getting rid of them. We need creativity and plenty of quality firepower also a tighter defence.Over dependent on drogba is not good. I cannot see chelsea winning any trophies this new season, just survive for the champion league spots.
ReplyDeleteThink back to last season - great opening, then some really bad end of year jitters. Was Carlo worried? No. Great January, then the big guns came back from ANC and we got the jitters again. Carlo, again, unworried. Then we dug in and kept our cool, only having a problem twice from then on until the end of the saeson (against Jose at home and at Spuds). Result: double won, and in style.
ReplyDeleteIn other words, relax. We will play much better. We'll have some slip-ups, but so will the others - lets face it with all due respect to the Reds can you see that United defence suriviving against any of the other top 4 or 5?
Relax, enjoy the ride, and we'll pick up something special come next summer, just trust in Carlo.
Phoenix, totally agree, Scholesy shoulda marched. And I'm a Man U fan!!
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of Paul Scholes I feel someone from Utd should apologise for that tackle, it was so deliberate it was untrue.
Chelsea had more shots on target, more shots off target, more shots blocked, more possession, more corners, better passing and better tackling, so it's easy to go overboard about the result without looking at how the game actually went. Even without allowing for the nailed-on penalty against Essien in the opening minutes and the nailed-on card for Scholes (and Valencia and Rooney) the only difference was the sharpness of Cole and Ivanovic at the back and the match-fit sharpness up front. These will come through in the next couple of weeks. Our first games are against WBA, Wigan, Stoke, WHU and Blackpool. Current form will not change the results against these teams and everyone will be up to speed by the time we have to play anyone actually good. What's the panic?
ReplyDeletei put the blame on Hilario, bacause,he made a simple mistake, and afraid to much
ReplyDeleteThe first 11 should have been:
ReplyDeleteMalouda……....……Drogba……...…….Nico
Lampsy……………....…………...…..….Essien
………………....…..Mikel…....……..…………..
Cole…..Terry…..Ivanovic……Ferreira
…………….......……Hilario……....………………
Carlotti got it wrong by starting Kalou, he always does best coming off at around 60-70th minute. Did you guys see that he was dribbling with himself, i always feel very uncomfortable seeing him in the starting line up. The goal is just not the case, he was lucky.
And Carlotti got it wrong again by taking Nico off for Drogba while Kalou was obviously under-performing. If Drogba wasn’t fully fit i would have taken him off and bring Kalou while Nico moves inside. I would have at 60th minute brought Sturridge in for Malouda (he tackles were all mis-timed).
Then Benayoun in for Mikel, Essien moves to holding midfield! Zhirkov for Cole was the only correct substitution!
So, at the end if Drogba is still strong, my 11 would be:
Sturridge………....….Drogba…....…………Kalou
Lampsy………………………….............….Benayoun
………………….........…..Essien…….....………………
Zhirkov…..Terry…..…Ivanovic…..…Ferreira
………………….......….Hilario………......……………..
I am hurt because i want to win everything against manure, against red nose and granny neville!
