Chelsea took to the pitch knowing they just had to win one more game and the Premiership title would be ours once again. I knew some of our fans were nervous before the game but if we knew then what we know now the party could of started before kick off!
I know it sounds strange but credit to Wigan for the way they started. The came to the Bridge to stifle Chelsea with three centre backs and five in midfield and in the opening exchanges more than held their own.
Chelsea took the lead after Kalou had been brought down 25 yards from goal. Drogba took the free kick and it hit the wall, bounced up into the air, Ballack headed the ball back into the box for Malouda, who under pressure chested the ball down for Anelka and he rifled the ball into the bottom corner from close range. Chelsea 1-0 up after six minutes and now people can relax.
Again, Wigan kept battling away and dominated the possession of the ball for two thirds of the first half. Chelsea weren't playing well, even a goal up and maybe it was because of nerves, but we weren't.
Chelsea made it two when some great interplay fed Lampard's run into the box, Caldwell brought him down as it looked like he was about to pull the trigger. Penalty was awarded and Caldwell was given a straight red. Lampard scored the penalty bottom left corner and made it 2-0 Chelsea.
Chelsea went in half time 2-0 up and now cruising.
Chelsea started the second half much much better and got their third goal soon after the restart. The ball was flicked out wide right from Lampard to Kalou. Kalou took the ball to the edge of the box and played the ball to his outside to Lampard who made a run past him, Lampard got to the byline, pulled the ball back sqaure for Kalou who had made his run into the middle after laying the ball off to Lampard. Kalou took a touch passed the defender and then placed the ball into the corner. 3-0 Chelsea.
Arguably the best goal in the game came from Nico Anelka who scored his second to make it 4-0 Chelsea. Drogba took a quick throw down our right hand side and threw the ball to Lampard. He dummied the ball and allowed it to come to Ivanovic who had time a space to cross the ball to the far post. Anelka judged the flight of the ball perfect and hit a volley into the ground and it found its way into the bottom corner, keeper no chance. A great finish!.
Didier Drogba (more on him in another post later) scored Chelsea's fifth goal and our 100th for the season. A fantastic cross came into the box and Drogba hit a fantastic overhead kick which in turn forced a brilliant save from Pollit in goal, the ball was pushed out wide and Lampard's first attempt to cross the ball was blocked, but as the ball came out to him he looked up, saw Didier far post and played the perfect cross to the far post, Didier pounced above two defenders and headed the ball home to make it 5-0 Chelsea and the goal took him one goal clear of Rooney in the race to the golden boot.
Chelsea made it six with a penalty from Didier. Some great inteplay down our left hand side resulted in Ashley Cole playing the ball into the feet of Drogba on the edge of the box, in turn he played ball into Ash's run and he was clipped by the defender. Definate penalty and Lampard handed the role to Didier to establish a two goal lead in the race for the golden boot. Drogba despatched the penalty like a rocket in off the post. Keeper no chance 6-0 Chelsea.
Chelsea were in seventh heaven as Joe Cole was played into the box down the right and knowing he was going to be put under pressure, slid into the challenge and managed to get a shot away on goal. Pollit once more made a good save but could only push the ball to his right straight into the path of Drogba who tapped home for his hat trick to make it Chelsea 7-0 Wigan.
Our eighth goal again came from some great work by Joe Cole. Down the right hand side and into the box the defender comes across and makes a tackle. The ball is caught between the two of them, Joe doesn't give it up and manages to force the ball away from the defender as they are both on the floor. Quick as a flash Joe picks himself up and plays a fantastic cross over the top to the back post and Ashley Cole is there to volley the ball home from 12 yards to make it a fantastic 8-0 Chelsea.
This was the best performance of our season and we had scored 103 goals in the Premier League, a record. As soon as the whistle went the party got into full swing.
Chelsea 8-0 Wigan. WE ARE CHAMPIONS!
