To put it simply, Chelsea needed a win to keep the pressure on Manchester United who had just beaten Man City to close the gap to one point. Chelsea being Chelsea this season blew it once again!
Chelsea did not turn up at all for the game, Spurs were much the better side and that's what hurts the most. The free flowing football was non existant and we were the ones that looked like we had played 3 games within a week.
JT lost his head out of frustration again at Spurs and for the second time with Dowd in charge of the Spurs v Chelsea encounters at White Hart Lane he sent him off. I can't stand Dowd as a Ref and never will, but JT should of known better.
Before the game kicked off I was pleased to see my prediction was right about the starting eleven. Deco and Joe Cole returned to the side with Malouda and Drogba, Anelka dropped to the bench. I thought we would have our balance right and we could dominate the game. With the threat posed by Malouda one side and Joe Cole the other, Drogba would have a field day but it wasn't the case at all.
Mikel getting injured added to the problems we were faced with as Spurs were well on top, Chelsea never got started and never pressed or closed down the Spurs players like we should have been. As a result Spurs created more chances in the game and let's be honest could and should have scored more.
The JT handball was another identical one from earlier in the week. Maybe the press coverage of the Bolton one had an influence on the decision on Saturday. However, it was given and Defoe scored easily. You do have to say that Spurs should have had a penalty before that one when Mikel came across and took out the impressive Bale.
Their second goal was another blow to an already depressing first half. Bale with the ball at his feet down our right hand side came forward to the edge of the box, cut inside on his right foot and beat Cech at his near post. 2-0 Tottenham and us Chelsea fans are wondering what the hell is going on as we are a shadow of the team we have been in recent weeks.
Gomes was called into action straight from the kick off after their second goal when the ball was played wide left and from a cross Lampard struck a volley towards goal and Gomes made the save. That was our chance to get one back just before half-time to give the boys a boost but the save was made and we went in 2-0 down.
Second half and with Ballack already coming on for the injured Mikel, Ancelotti makes two more changes. He brings on Anelka for Joe Cole and Ivanovic for Ferreira. Then just as we are about to kick off Drogba heads over to the sidelines complaining that he has tweaked his groin. It looked as though he wanted to come off, but with all three subs already made he has no choice but to play on.. five mins later he seems ok.....funny that!
For all our efforts to play better in the second half Spurs still created more chances. Cech some great saves to keep us in the game and was the ONLY person to come out of the game with any credit for Chelsea. Spurs squandered chance after chance as Chelsea looked to chase the game and if it wasn't for Cech it could have been a whole lot worse.
Ivanovic went close with a long range effort for Chelsea that flew just over the bar before we got a goal back. The ball was played out wide for Ballack and his early cross was met by Lampard with a typical late run into the box and he flicked the ball into the corner of the net to make it 2-1.
But it was all too late for Chelsea. Mikel's injury, JT getting sent off, losing 2-1 and just our all round performance was enough to turn Saturday into a nightmare. We are now once more only 1 point ahead of United. Ok, we are still top of the league but how many times this season have we thrown away the chance to extend our lead at the top of the table.
For now we have a long long week ahead to wait until we can put things right against Stoke. I hope that for once Ancelotti gets amongst the players and sorts out the wrongs from the disaster at the Lane. I have said we have cup final after cup final now till the end of the season and this is even more apparent after what happened this weekend. Spurs travel to Old Trafford this weekend and let's hope they put in the performance against them as they have against us and the Arse this week. It pains me to say it but credit to Spurs on their performance.
For now though, let's hope the players and the staff at Chelsea realise that they can't let this slip away and buck their idea's up for the final push.
Gutted!
KTBFFH!
Well balanced article.
ReplyDeleteBy the way it's 'should have', 'could have' etc. not 'should of'.
I'd let it go once, but five times?
Must try harder.
Noted, thanks and have changed.
ReplyDeleteTo give a view from the other side:
ReplyDeleteIt was a classic case of misunderestimating. It may have hurt your pride a bit to try to counter Spurs play, rather than going out with the attitude that you would outfootball us if we tried to play and it was up to us to stop you, but it might have got you a result. Most Spurs fans were delightedly baffled that there was little effort to double up on Bale...which is quite effective when he is playing as a winger (i.e. the way Fulham played him at Craven Cottage in the FA Cup). Liverpool played like the away side a t Anfield this year, sat deep and outworked us...it wasn't pretty but it got them a result.
On top of that some of your players did look to be not quite up-for-it, as well.
i hate to say this, but terry has become a liability.as captain he is expected to set an example yet when the team needed him most,he gets himself stupidly sent off.last sat he nearly snapped milner's leg in two, tues he got away with handball against bolton.the stories now are john terry before any mention of the team...no,i'm not a bandwaggon jumper,i've been watching chelsea live 28 years.ps it was the thing from tring poll who sent jt off in the previous game at spurs!!
ReplyDeletethis is JT's worst season individually, even if we do win the cup or the league or both.
ReplyDeleteAnd for the last two seasons whenever we go a goal down, the whole team panics. remember in the 4-2 loss to man city when we were trailing by a goal, both are CBs were in their box and mikel was left to defend and bellamy scored the 2nd.
we used to be so calm in the mourinho days...
