Tonight Manchester United were beaten by Bayern Munich at the Alliance Arena and to top their night off Wayne Rooney was helped off as he limped from the field after twisting his ankle and has to be a doubt for Saturday when we take on United at Old Trafford.
I have to say I fully expected United to put in the same kind of performance against a weakened Bayen side as they did away in Milan but it was not to be. They started off well with a goal from Rooney after a minute but went down 2-1 with Bayern scoring a late winner in injury time.
In the build up to the winner Rooney chasing back to put the pressure on the man with the ball, went over on his right ankle, looking in pain he hit the deck clutching his ankle and had to be helped off the field. Its a blow for United but could be a blessing in disguise for Chelsea who are looking to complete a double over United this season.
What was encouraging from Chelsea's point of view, surely Ancelotti has picked up on it too, was how tired United's midfield looked in the second half. They hardly got forward enough to trouble Bayern and the likes of Gary Neville and Evra had their hands full and hardly ventured across the half way line.
Bayern pressed United all over the pitch and as a result United kept losing possession of the ball and put themselves under pressure. Bayern as a result created more chances than United in the second half and fully deserved the win on the night.
Carlo and the boys should take heart from the second half performance of Bayern Munich and use what they have learn't tonight to get the boys focused in the free week we have to prepare for the game.
