After our dismal performance on Tuesday night and as a result elimination from the Champions League the rumour mill has well and truly got into full swing. Again, the age of Chelsea's squad has come into focus as Roman Abramovich is once again set (as reported) to ring the changes at Chelsea.
If you remember when Roman came to the club he appointed Peter Keynon soon after. Keynon as we all know spouted off to anyone that would listen at the time of the 5-year plan to make Chelsea the biggest club in the world. The football world scoffed at the thought, but Abramovich wanted it to be the case without question and 7 years on we are still not even close.
Until Tuesday night we had a great record in the Champions League from the moment we first took part in the competition by always reaching the Quarter Final stages at least, the Semi Finals nearly every season in recent times and of course that fateful night in Moscow in the Final. You could say Chelsea have been getting somewhere near there or there abouts, however it all came crashing down this week.
With the likes of Man City and their bottomless pot of money (remember what that felt like?), Real Madrid and all their bank loans allowing them to splash stupid amounts of money at their problems and other clubs who are able to spend £15-£20 million on players these days, Roman will need to instruct the Chelsea hierarchy to act quickly.
I think this season more than any other we have an idea who will be out the door come the Summer. Deco has already stated he wants to leave. Bit part players who haven't really offered much to the Chelsea cause will need to be concerned and players who don't have age on their side need to be worried too. If the press are to be believed then the likes of, Joe Cole, Ferreira, Kalou, Mikel, Belletti and Hilario are ones that will be offloaded along with Deco. Michael Ballack's been offered a lower contract to stay at the club and Nicolas Anelka is in talks for a new one.
As always in the Summer there are always players who make way, but its always the ones coming in that keep us all guessing, interested throughout the Summer. Again, if the papers are to be believed then this is who Roman/Carlo and the Chelsea board are looking to bring to the Bridge to "freshen up the squad", Torres, Ribery, Villa, Aguero, Hamsik, Schweinsteiger, Rodwell, Di Maria, Maicon, Pazzini, Kjaer and Dembele. All young players with age on their side.
The point to remember about all this is that its rumoured that Roman doesn't want to return to the early days by splashing the cash willy nilly at Chelsea. To be fair we haven't exactly broken the bank in the last couple of seasons. Tuesday night may have changed all that as I think now Roman believes that if this club is going to move forward and he has to spend, then so be it.
It could be a busy Summer for Chelsea with quite a few players looking over their shoulder, while others waiting for that phone call. One thing is for sure and Sir Alex has proven it at United. When you believe that the side is becoming stale, you have no choice. You ring the changes for the benefit of the club and let's hope come the start of next season we are looking at a much younger, hungry Chelsea ready to take us to the next level.
(Who would you get rid of and bring into Chelsea this summer? Post a comment asap!)
CAREFREE & KTBFFH EVERYONE.
Relax man, lets hope we pick ourselves up from the defeat and win the EPL and the FA cup. We really need to give our youth a chance, where is Borini, sturridge and Kakuta. After some sub appearances , they are now missing from first team. it is really the time now that we get our acts in order
