No sooner had the story of the Fifa Ban broke this afternoon, the written & online press stepped into action about Gael Kakuta and Chelsea.
The Sun online ran an article stating that the Lens President accused Chelsea of "stealing Kakuta when he was 16 and stated 95 times out of 100 its always English Clubs.
The offside.com has run a story stating "Didn't anyone tell Chelsea, Don't mess with Karma" stating that the fine seems to fall a bit short for a club that has taken such "high moral grounds in the courtroom recently". They also add the the fine should be higher, maybe 17m euros payable directly to Adrian Mutu.
The Daily Mail, Guardian and the Mirror delve into "Chelsea's dodgy transfer dealings", "Diary of transfer disputes" and "Chelsea have got previous". They each look at the transfers of Frank Arnesen from Spurs, Ashley Cole from Arsenal, John Mikel Obi, Michael Woods, Tom Tiawo, and of course Gael Kakuta.
The Timesonline takes a different approach to the news today with their article "Let's shed no tears for Chelsea" by stating "Let one aspect be made clear, this should not seriously affect the club's chances of winning the Premier League and Champions League this season". But then goes onto explain that Adrian Mutu was sacked and is faced with a £15m bill for compensation for breech of contract. It states "If Kakuta was induced , it is a serious matter that goes well beyond the relatively trivial offence of tapping up or sounding out people about whether or not they would fancy a move".
To me it seems as thought the press are just waiting for that carrot to be dangled in front of them for them to chomp at the bit to get their teeth into Chelsea. Today is no different and this is one that will rumble on and on. Chelsea of course have said in their statement that they will be appealing against the situation we find ourselves in with Fifa but you have to say that no positive outcome can be taken from this situation.
Roma were found guilty of encouraging Phillipe Mexes to break his contract with Auxerre after they had refused his contract. They were fined 7m euros, Mexes was banned for six weeks and Roma were also banned for two registration periods which was reduced to one after appeal. You have to say that this looks like the best possible scenario for us now (one registration period and not two) and we have the players to cope with this situation.
Of course the powers that be at Chelsea will not let this rest until impossible to get any further but I simply can't see this being a 100% positive outcome. Of course there are arguments that he is only a youth player, but Platini and Sepp Blatter will make the most out of this one in my opinion but you have to say that surely we aren't the first and won't be the last. Its reported that United are now being looked at after their dealings with a player from Le Harve.
Its us that are being made a meal out of, being dragged through the gutter once more and you do, as a Chelsea fan, have to ask the question: Are we guilty? If so who is to blame here?. Alot of the focus of attention will come to Frank Arnesen's door as at the time was in charge of youth recruitment at the time of Kakuta's arrival at Chelsea. No doubt his dealings will be the focus of attention now in the press and the media and you can imagine Roman will be fuming as he see's "his club" being dragged through the mill once more.
I am getting all sorts of messages through today from different Chelsea fans and one person has suggested that heads should roll after this. But like I have already said I'm sure (if found guilty) we aren't the first and won't be the last. Do you guys think heads should roll now at Chelsea ?
Like alot of you today when I heard the news, I thought two things. Firstly that they will be making an example out of us because of our owner and who we are. Also that if this ban and fine goes through after appeal, they would of set a precedent now and I can promise you there will be plenty of clubs that will have their dealings looked at with a fine tooth comb by FIFA.
Its not just with youth players either. Look at the way Real Madrid have dealt with transfers and possible signings who are still contracted to other clubs. Man City and the way that Mark Hughes has gone about signing certain players, for example Lescott from Everton. This could seriously explode and have a snowball effect within the European game.
One thing is for sure, right now its us that are taking the flack, the press have jumped on the anti-Chelsea bandwagon once more and right now we are right there for the taking!
